This semester was filled with fun and lots of events for the School of Communication! As the semester draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to look back at the events that made this season truly special. From academic milestones to community celebrations, this term was filled with unforgettable moments that brought us together, inspired learning, and created lasting memories.
Communication Week Events
Monday: Kickoff Breakfast – Students started the week with a delicious breakfast in Thompson Hall Lobby, enjoying coffee, pastries, and more. It was the perfect opportunity to fuel up and connect with classmates and professors before a busy week of events.
Monday: Comm Coffee Shop “And Then What?” – In a cozy, café-style setting, students gathered for a creative storytelling session. Each participant added a twist to an evolving story, resulting in hilarious and imaginative tales that kept everyone entertained.
Tuesday: Jeopardy – SoC students formed teams and put their knowledge to the test in a thrilling game of Jeopardy. Questions ranged from school history and professors to fun facts about specific classes, creating a spirited and competitive atmosphere.
Tuesday: Squid Games – Inspired by the popular TV show, students competed in exciting challenges like Red Light – Green Light, cookie-cutting using only a needle, and Rock, Paper, Scissors. Contestants showed exemplary determination and creativity!
Wednesday: Hilliard Speech Showcase – Talented students from Principles of Communication classes delivered powerful speeches on diverse topics. Judges awarded prizes to the top three presenters, recognizing their skill, confidence, and thoughtful messages. Jamie Jewell came in 1st place, with Mary Tinsley in 2nd and Lydia Peacock in 3rd.
Thursday: Alumni Panel – Esteemed alumni from all four SoC majors returned to share career advice, industry tips, and personal experiences. Students asked insightful questions, gaining valuable guidance for future professional success.
Thursday: Yard Party – Students, faculty, and staff gathered at Director Stephens’ house for an afternoon of fun and relaxation. Guests enjoyed games like cornhole and bocce ball, delicious food, and lively conversations under the autumn sun.
Friday: Conversation with Monica Potts – National journalist and author Monica Potts joined a virtual session to discuss her career and her book The Forgotten Girls. Students engaged in a thoughtful Q&A, learning about investigative journalism and the storytelling process.
Friday: Nerf War – Thompson Hall Lobby transformed into a battleground as students armed with Nerf blasters participated in various action-packed game modes. Laughter, strategy, and friendly rivalry filled the air.
Special Events and Celebrations
Academic Experience Day (November 1, 2024): Future Bears connected with SoC and College of Science and Engineering faculty, explored academic programs, and experienced a college classroom atmosphere. Faculty-led sessions and tours of campus facilities provided a glimpse into college life.
Fall Majors Fair (October 3, 2024): Students explored potential majors and minors at the UCA Fall Majors Fair. SoC faculty and Student Advisory Board members shared program highlights and asked students, “How will you Inform, Influence, and Impact at UCA?”
SoC Homecoming Tailgate (October 26, 2024): SoC set up a tailgate spot featuring gator bites, catfish nuggets, fries, and chili. Faculty and students mingled, shared program information, and cheered on the Bears during the homecoming football game.
Commsgiving (November 25, 2024): The annual Commsgiving potluck brought together students, faculty, and staff for a celebration of gratitude, delicious food, and meaningful conversations. It was a heartwarming reminder of the supportive SoC community.
Graduation (December 14, 2024): The semester concluded with the SoC graduation ceremony, marking the achievements of our graduates. Families, friends, and faculty gathered to celebrate this significant milestone and wish graduates continued success.
