Simon Tam of The Slants Joins the School of Communication Oct. 7-8

Sorry if we try too hard
To take some power back for ours
The language of oppression
Will lose to education
Until the words can’t hurt us again

So sorry if you take offense
But silence will not make amends
The system’s all wrong
And it won’t be long
Before the kids are singing our song”

– The Slants, “From The Heart” (watch the music video)

Simon Tam – author, musician and self-described “troublemaker” – will be an Artist-in-Residence welcomed by the School of Communication October 7-8. He’ll be speaking (and performing songs) about communication as activism, discrimination against Asian Americans during the pandemic, and his landmark Supreme Court case defending the right of his band to appropriate a term long used to discriminate against them. Read more about Simon.
Simon will be here in-person AND we will live stream all of his events. We hope you’ll attend in the way that you are comfortable.
We especially encourage you to check out Slanted: How an Asian American Troublemaker Took on the Supreme Courtat 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7. It will be a mix of music and storytelling that should be really special.
