Disease Detectives: STEM the Spread of Infections

A free program for up to 30 8th grade students (7th grade students admitted if space allows) that explores epidemiology and the spread of infectious disease. Participants will engage in a number of explorations, including:

  • Mathematical modeling of disease spread
  • Microscopy investigations of specific diseases
  • Small group investigations of history, pathology, and mitigation methods of different diseases
  • Explore careers in and related to Health Sciences
  • Opportunities to tour University of Central Arkansas facilities and meet faculty experts in health science fields

The program will meet for lab and seminar time on two Saturdays: October 29 and November 12, 9 am – 3 pm, and lunch will be provided. Tours of UCA facilities and meetings with UCA faculty will also occur on two Tuesday afternoons: November 1 and November 15, 4:15 – 5:45 pm.

The lab and seminar will be led by experienced science educators Nicole Martin and Amy Cochran.
