All activities involving animals must be conducted in accordance with humane and ethical principals as established by federal laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to animal care and use. The University of Central Arkansas has an Animal Welfare Assurance on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and, therefore, follows the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The information and animal use application form in this manual conform to the PHS Policy.
Definitions
Animal: any live vertebrate animal (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians).
Activities: research, teaching, training, experimentation, observation, and related activities whether in the laboratory or in the field.
Primary Investigator: the faculty member with primary responsibility for the oversight of the research, teaching, training, experimentation, observation, and related activities.
Animals may not be acquired for use at UCA before approval is received by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Protocol Review Process
The UCA IACUC uses an expedited review process when possible. In an expedited review, a copy of the protocol application is sent to each IACUC member; members read the protocol and let the Research Compliance Officer know if there is any objection to expedited review. The application is then reviewed by the veterinarian or chair. If a full review is requested or needed, it will be conducted at the next semiannual meeting (if timely) or at a called meeting.
