Required Education

The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) oversees compliance to the federal requirements for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training. This training is required for all undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students receiving funding to conduct research from NSF and NIH. All Principal Investigators receiving RCR-required awards are responsible for informing ORC of 1.) any awards they have received from NSF or NIH with RCR requirements and, 2.) any personnel paid from their award who may require RCR-training. The form below should be submitted to ORC within 30 days of receipt of the award or of hiring of new personnel:

UCA has contracted with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) site to provide access to on-line research ethics instruction in various aspects of RCR. The modules include topics such as research misconduct, data management, authorship, peer review, conflicts of interest, mentoring and collaborative science.

NSF:

Implementation of Section 7009 of the America COMPETES Act (42 U.S.C. 1862o-1)

Each institution that applies for financial assistance from NSF must have a plan in place to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research.

NIH:

NOT-OD-019

NIH requires that all trainees receiving support through training, research education, and other designated grant programs must receive 8 contact hours in RCR instruction.

This applies to the following programs: D43, D71, F05, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F37, F38, K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K12, K18, K22, K23, K24, K25, K26, K30, K99/R00, KL1, KL2, R25, R36, T15, T32, T34, T35, T36, T37, T90/R90, TL1, TU2, and U2R.

Some NIH programs not on the above list may also require RCR training if it is requested in the specific proposal guidelines. Please consult the UCA Research Compliance Officer if you are unsure if your program requires RCR training. NIH training will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Research Compliance.
