UCA’S WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP NETWORK WELCOMES TWO NATIONAL SPEAKERS IN NOVEMBER

The University of Central Arkansas Women’s Leadership Network (WLN), through partnerships with the Division of Outreach and Community Engagement and the Arkansas Center for Research in Economics, will welcome Dr. Nicole McZeal Walters and Nan Alexander Doyal to campus for back-to-back events in November.

On Monday, Nov. 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the Elizabeth House (120 Elizabeth St., off Robins Avenue in Conway) Doyal, a critically acclaimed author and businesswoman, will lead a discussion for the WLN Bookclub on her book “Dig Where You Are.” Doyal’s message centers around how one person’s effort can save a life, empower a community and create meaningful change in the world. Doyal will also conduct a public presentation Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 1:40 p.m. in the UCA College of Business Auditorium. A workshop titled “Conway Challenges” will follow at 2:30 p.m. and will include sessions on homelessness, reducing juvenile recidivism and supporting immigrant communities.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 6-8 p.m. at UCA’s Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center, Walters, who is dean of the Associate of Applied Science Program at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, will present an interactive session on how emotional intelligence can help women influence others, juggle multiple tasks, manage conflict, and grow personally and professionally.

Nan Alexander Doyal

Nan Alexander Doyal

Nan Alexander Doyal is a critically acclaimed author and businesswoman. She has lived and worked in North America, Europe and Asia for more than 30 years, most recently as president of The International Forum, an organization that creates hands-on learning experiences for the leaders of global corporations. For over a decade, she led this effort and its network worldwide, creating programs in Japan, China, India, Thailand, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Belgium and the United States. Prior to this, she worked at Ameritech Corp. in Chicago, American Express Travel Related Services Co. Inc. in New York, Shiseido Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, and RBC Dominion Securities in Toronto. She is a graduate of Smith College and The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

In 2008, she left her corporate career to spend time with ordinary men and women who were solving challenges facing our societies, in creative and sustainable ways. From the slums of Mumbai and the villages of Tibet and northeast Thailand to the inner cities of Philadelphia and San Francisco, and a ghetto outside Stockholm, she tells their stories and what she learned in her award winning book “Dig Where You Are: How One Person’s Effort Can Save a Life, Empower a Community and Create Meaningful Change in the World.”

Dr. Nicole McZeal Walters

Dr. Nicole McZeal Walters is the founding dean of the Associate of Applied Science Program at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. She also holds an appointment in the Educational Leadership Department, where she is an associate professor of Educational Leadership. As a leadership professor, her research agenda includes developing leaders to embrace servant and moral leadership, emotional intelligence, and integrating culture and language to support academic achievement in historically underserved, marginalized students. She is a former schoolteacher, specialist and principal. Her academic work has been published in the Women, Gender, and Families of Color Journal, the International Journal of Educational Reform, Wisconsin English Journal, Gifted Child Today, School Leadership Review and others, and she has lectured widely at local, national, and international conferences and universities.
