UCA’S BAUM GALLERY TO HOST STUDENT ART COMPETITIVE

The University of Central Arkansas’ Baum Gallery will once again host the Annual Student Art Competitive (ASAC) from March 4-15. A reception will be held on March 7 at 4 p.m.

During this event, UCA students are allowed to submit up to three different pieces for possible inclusion. All works are then jurored, and multiple awards are given. This is an opportunity for students to participate in a curated museum exhibition.

This year’s juror is Kevin Cole. A native of Pine Bluff, Cole is an art professor and mixed media artist who is currently based out of Atlanta. He received his B.S. in art education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1982, his M.A. in art education and painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983, and his MFA in drawing from Northern Illinois University in 1984. Cole’s work is in high demand and can be found in dozens of museum collections, including the Arkansas Arts Center and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, both in Little Rock; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park; the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington D.C.; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; and many others.

“We encourage all art students at the university to participate in the competitive,” said Brian Young, director of Baum Gallery. “It gives them an opportunity to participate, meaningfully, in a museum setting. This show also allows students to view their work in a more critical way.”

All UCA students, regardless of major, are welcome to participate. Artwork must be submitted at Baum Gallery between Feb. 18 and 22. Submission hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All accepted works will be installed in the Baum Gallery.
