UCA artist-in-residence hosts American Horn Quartet

The brass chamber ensemble American Horn Quartet will be an artist-in-residence Sunday, Feb. 27, through Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the University of Central Arkansas for the first time since 2001.

Hosted by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the quartet will perform a public concert on Tuesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Performance Hall.

Earlier in the afternoon, the ensemble will present and discuss “The Business of Chamber Music” in the Recital Hall at the Snow Fine Arts Center from 1:40-2:30 p.m.

“The American Horn Quartet is one of the four most recognized chamber ensembles worldwide; a group that represents as one of the best in music-making… [The horn] has an amazing capability of instrument range, pitch, expression and color, and the quartet is an amazing teacher of this through performances,”  Brent Shires, associate professor of horn, said.

The American Horn Quartet was founded by David Johnson in 1982 and consists of four Americans residing in Europe. Current members are Kerry Turner, Kristina Mashcher-Turner, Geoffrey Winter and Denise Tryon.

In the Recital Hall at the Snow Fine Arts Center on Sunday, Feb. 27. from 7-9 p.m., there will be a rehearsal clinic with the Arkansas Horn Club.

Monday, Feb. 28, there will be a presentation and discussion by Kerry Turner, the quartet’s most recognized member, over music composition from 12-12:50 p.m. in Snow Fine Arts Center, Room 312.

Later that afternoon from 2-2:50 p.m. in the Recital Hall at the Snow Fine Arts Center, a brass area master class and clinic will take place.

Over the course of many decades, the Quartet has presented hundreds of concerts and masterclasses worldwide, including venues in London, Los Angeles, and Zürich, where their exuberant performances combine existing repertoire with their own prize-winning compositions and arrangements.

For music students and faculty only,  the quartet will have an open dress rehearsal Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Performance Hall.

The artist-in-residence program is funded by UCA’s arts fee and is administered by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. All events are free. For more information about the program, visit CAHSS artists-in-residence.
