UCA’s Model United Nations received the Bear CLAWS award at the December meeting of the University of Central Arkansas Board of Trustees.
CLAWS, an acronym for Celebrating the Lofty Achievements of Our Wonderful Students, is awarded to one or more exceptional students or recognized student organizations during regularly scheduled board meetings.
UCA’s Model UN has about 25 students on the roster. Accepting the CLAWS award on behalf of the organization were President Jaylan Harris, Vice President Emily Temple, Secretary General Julien Mrad and Secretary Kyle Urban.
Faculty advisers for the group are Mark Elrod and Mark Mullenbach.
The Arkansas Model United Nations (AMUN) conference, created by the late Professor Sims McClintock as an educational simulation of the UN General Assembly and other UN bodies, was first held at the then Arkansas State Teachers College (ASTC) in Conway in 1966. The first AMUN Conference was held on campus in January 1967, making this year the 59th annual conference. Since then, the AMUN conference has involved the participation of thousands of high school and college/university students from throughout Arkansas and neighboring states.
The 59th AMUN Conference, held Nov. 22 and 23, welcomed more than 500 high school students from 29 high schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri. Students participated in simulations of UN decision-making bodies and other international organizations representing more than 100 countries in the UN Security Council, UN Human Rights Council, UN Economic Social Council and the International Court of Justice.
During the award presentation, President Houston Davis said, “These students accomplish incredible work, and we appreciate all that they do to help shape UCA by representing our university well.”
