The UCA Visiting Poet Series will continue Tuesday, March 12, with a campus visit and reading by Hawaii poet Eric Paul Shaffer at 7 p.m. in the McCastlain Art Lecture Hall on the UCA campus. The series is jointly sponsored by the School of Language & Literature and Slant, the School’s international journal of contemporary poetry.
Shaffer’s reading is open to the public and is free of charge. In addition, he will meet with students in two poetry classes the morning of March 13.
A contributor to Slant since 2006, Shaffer is the author of eight poetry books, including his most recent collection, Green Leaves: Selected and New Poems, published by Coyote Arts Press in 2023. Over 600 of his poems have appeared in literary journals in the USA, Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Nicaragua, India, Iran, Scotland, Singapore, and Wales. He published his first novel, Burn & Learn, in 2009.
In 2002, Shaffer received the Elliot Cades Award, Hawaii’s most prestigious literary prize. In addition, he won the Ka Palapala Po‘okela Book Award in 2006 and 2019 and the James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry in 2009.
After a stint living and teaching on the Japanese island of Okinawa, Shaffer moved to the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where he now teaches composition, literature, and creative writing at Honolulu Community College.
For more information on Shaffer’s campus visit, contact Slant editor Michael Blanchard, adjunct professor of English and editor of Slant, at mblanchard@uca.edu.

Do you have an idea for a program or event, but don’t have departmental funds to fund it? Apply for a UCA Foundation Staff Grant.
Each fall and spring semester, the Foundation awards grants to staff to support events or activities that enhance opportunities at UCA. These grants are intended to encourage creative endeavors, programs, and activities that enhance the culture of UCA. Applications should be submitted no later than March 1st.
Would my idea qualify for funding?
The highest priority is given to innovative proposals that positively impact staff and engage other members of the UCA community in a manner consistent with UCA principles.
Proposals are more likely to be funded if:
Requested funds are less than $1,000.
Individuals or units requesting funds have not received foundation funding in the past 3 years.
Similar projects have not received foundation funding in the past 3 years.
(Proposals for equipment, travel, or stipends will generally not be funded.)
Questions?
Please see the FAQ attached below. Contact Staff Senate at staffsenate@uca.edu if you still have questions.
