Description
While interns do not write for the magazine, they are given a number of responsibilities:
- Fact-checking every piece that goes into the magazine (this means verifying the accuracy of names, dates, quotes, arguments, etc.)
- Formatting articles in the Quark publishing program
- Co-editing pieces with the lead editors and communicating with authors about edits, deadlines, etc.
- Proofreading pages before the magazine goes to press
- Carrying out other research-related tasks as requested by the editors
- Contacting publishing houses and record companies with requests for review copies of books and CDs
- Occasionally assisting with website content and proofreading
- Reading and evaluating unsolicited submissions (slush)
Work Schedule
Interns work up to 20 hours per week between the hours of 9:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
Qualifications:
The OA desires applicants who have at least a basic familiarity with the magazine and its content. Students are encouraged to read at LEAST one issue in full before applying. Back copies of the magazine are available for free in the magazine’s office.
The OA considers applicants from any major though majors that might be particularly compatible with the job include English, writing, mass communication, journalism, philosophy, linguistics, and world languages.
Prior experience with publishing is not a requirement.
Skills and abilities of particular importance for this internship include:
- Strong, precise communication skills (spelling, grammar, clarity of writing for the purposes of e-mail communication)
- Professionalism
- A good attitude (a sense of humor is also welcome!)
- Flexibility; you must be able to juggle several tasks at once and realign priorities as requested by the editors
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Strong research skills
- Strong critical reading skills and the ability to concisely and accurately summarize/synthesize what you’ve read
- Intellectual curiosity (essential for a good fact-checker and/or editor)
- Interest in literature and reading–a specific interest in Southern lit is a plus

Internship Credit
Students may earn up to three hours of elective credit for the successful completion of this internship.
To be eligible for internship credit, students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.25 in their degree program. In addition, applicants must have completed at least nine hours of writing courses at the 3000-level.
Enrollment in WRTG 4385 requires approval by Dr. Kyle Mattson, Internship Coordinator.
