A new mural at the University of Central Arkansas is turning heads—and turning a hallway into a powerful celebration of student-athlete success.
Installed in the corridor leading to the Athletic Academic Resource Center (AARC), the large-scale mural showcases all UCA athletic programs in a cohesive, visually striking design. Painted in the university’s signature purple and gray, the artwork not only reinforces school spirit but also highlights the diversity and unity of UCA’s athletic community.
The mural was designed and painted by Lindsey Witting Barnum, marketing content designer and strategist for the Office of Strategic Communications. Created entirely by hand, it was shaped by artistic vision and strategic messaging.
I wanted this mural to reflect parts of the unique journey of each student-athlete who passes by,” said Barnum. “It’s not just about athletics—it’s about identity, their pride, and their shared experiences working toward graduation. Every detail was intentional.
Because of the space’s long and narrow layout, Barnum designed the mural to be experienced in segments, creating visual moments that build as visitors walk through. The mural not only brightens the space but also invites reflection and pride from everyone who passes by.
The project was a collaborative effort between Strategic Communications and the AARC, driven by student feedback calling for more public art and a stronger representation of student-athletes on campus.
When asked about the impact of the new space, Scott Brezee, Director of the Athletic Academic Resource Center, said,
The new mural in our hallway is more than just artwork—it’s a celebration of the dedication, perseverance, and excellence of our student-athletes. It serves as a daily inspiration, reminding us all of the hard work and passion that drive success both on and off the field. A huge thank you to Lindsey for her incredible creativity and dedication in bringing this vision to life—her talent and effort have truly made this mural something special!”
Supported by NCAA funds and the Office of Strategic Communications, the mural reflects months of planning, design, and installation led by Barnum with care and intention.
Lindsey’s work on this mural is not only a testament to her incredible talent but also an example of the kind of impact we aim to make through visual storytelling,” said Bryttani Bartlett Montgomery, Director of Strategic Communications. “Projects like this help us connect with students in meaningful ways and build a stronger campus culture. It’s part of the larger vision of our office to bring more art, creativity, and authenticity to our physical spaces at UCA.”
Since its unveiling, the mural has become a point of pride for our division. Beyond beautifying the space, it serves as a daily reminder of the university’s commitment to celebrating achievement—on the field, in the classroom, and all the way to graduation.
