Below is a concise U.S. Flag etiquette guide for campus based on the U.S. Flag Code (Title 4, United States Code) and common best practices.
Displaying the Flag
Time of display: The flag is customarily flown from sunrise to sunset. It may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated at night.
Weather: Do not display the flag in inclement weather unless it is an all-weather flag.
Position of honor: The U.S. flag is always placed above or before any other flag. When displayed with other flags, the U.S. flag should be at the center and highest point.
In a procession: The flag should be carried to the marching right (flag’s own right).
On a stage/auditorium: If displayed flat, it should be above and behind the speaker. If displayed on a staff, it should be to the speaker’s right (audience’s left).
Respect for the Flag
- Never let the flag touch the ground, floor, water, or anything beneath it.
- Do not use the flag as clothing, bedding, or drapery. (Patriotic clothing is fine if it is not an actual flag.)
- The flag should never be used for advertising purposes or printed on disposable items.
- When the flag is no longer fit for display (torn, faded), it should be retired respectfully, usually by burning in a dignified manner (many American Legion or VFW posts offer this service).
