CONWAY —The University of Central Arkansas Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will perform together in concert on Oct. 9 at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.
The concert, free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The UCA Symphonic Band will open the concert with its first performance of the season.
“The members of the Symphonic Band are a combination of music majors and non-music majors,” said Brantley Douglas, associate director of bands. “This group typically presents two concerts a semester and focuses on wind literature that future music educators would encounter in their teaching careers, as well as the core standards in the band world and newer and contemporary pieces.”
The symphonic program will include “Flying the Breeze” by Philip Sparke, “Elegy For A Young American” by Ronald Lo Presti, “Commando March” by Samuel Barber and “Chorale And Shaker Dance” by John Zdechlik.
Mary P. Light, a graduate wind band conductor, will direct the band in the “Elegy for a Young American.”
The UCA Wind Ensemble will then take the stage for the second portion of the concert.
“The Wind Ensemble program features music composed specifically for wind band by famous composers such as Richard Wagner and Camille Saint Saens,” said Dr. Ricky Brooks, conductor of UCA’s Wind Ensemble Band. “The concert is part of the year-long UCA Band Centennial Celebration.”
The wind ensemble program will include “Huldigungsmarsch” by Wagner, “Occident and Orient, Opus 25” by Saint Saens, “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Fischer Tull and “La Procession du Rocio” by Joaquin Turina.
Light will also conduct “La Procession du Rocio.”
“Our next concert on Dec. 2 will feature music composed by UCA alumni in honor of the centennial and music that will be part of a worldwide broadcast on YouTube,” Brooks said.
