CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas’s Department of Music will host a Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band concert on Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.

The 7:30 p.m. concert, free and open to the public, should last approximately an hour and a half. A brief intermission will take place during the transition between the two groups.

“The concert will be very entertaining,” Dr. Ricky Brooks, director of UCA’s Wind Ensemble, said. “Some concerts are intellectual, some are historical, but this concert is entertaining. It has a lot of variety.”

The Wind Ensemble program will include a jazz influence, “Passage,” by Scott Lindroth, conducted by Les Sellers, graduate conducting intern; “Concert Etude no. 49” featuring Eric Liu, trumpet soloist; “Hill Song no. 2” by Grainger; “Angels in the Architecture” by Frank Ticheli, featuring Baylee Elkins, a student vocalist; and “Purple Pageant March” by Karl King.

“The trio of the ‘Purple Pageant March’ will be familiar to some audience members because it is the UCA fight song,” Brooks said. “’Angels in the Architecture’ is our showcase piece. ‘Hill Song no. 2’ will feature 23 players, and each player has a separate part.”

Liu is one of three winners of the 2013-14 UCA Student Spotlight concerto competition.

“The Student Spotlight Competition is an annual competition designed to feature some of the many talented members of the UCA Wind Ensemble,” Brooks said.

The Symphonic Band program, under the direction of Brantley Douglas, will include “Slava,” “Savannah River Holiday,” “Dynamica,” and “Concertino,” featuring Christian Carichner of the UCA music faculty as a euphonium soloist.
