WIND ENSEMBLE CONCERT SET FOR APRIL 23

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas’s Department of Music will host a UCA Wind Ensemble concert on Tuesday, April 23, in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.
The 7:30 p.m. concert, free and open to the public, should last approximately an hour.
“These Wind Ensemble students are among some of the best I’ve have had during my 17 years at UCA,” Dr. Ricky Brooks, director of bands, said. “It is a challenging program, and I am looking forward to the concert.”
The program will include “Unending Stream of Life,” a 28-minute piece by Davis Maslanka, based on the hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King”; the hot Latin-jazz “La Pequena Habana” by Todd Malicoate; “Easter Monday on the White House Lawn” by John Phillip Sousa; and “Glorious Journey” by Arkansas composer Charles Booker. The audience will experience a variety of musical genres ranging from ragtime to romantic to jazz.
Kayla Copeland, senior flute music education major from Greenbrier, will be featured as flute soloist on “The Carnival of Venice” for flute and band. Copeland was the winner of the UCA Wind Ensemble Spotlight Competition. The Student Spotlight Competition, begun in 2011, is an annual competition designed to feature some of the many talented members of the UCA Wind Ensemble.
“I am excited to feature Kayla Copeland in this concert,” Brooks said. “She has done a lot for our music program at UCA.”
