Michael A. Middleton
Michael A. Middleton, president of the University of Missouri System, will visit the University of Central Arkansas on Oct. 18, 2016 at 1:40 p.m. in room 205A in the campus Student Center.
Middleton’s talk is titled, “Intercultural Communications in Higher Education.” The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Middleton was appointed interim president of the University of Missouri System on Nov. 12, 2015 by the University of Missouri Board of Curators. As interim president, Middleton serves as the chief executive officer of the university.
Middleton previously served as deputy chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia, providing leadership that focused on legal, policy and regulatory compliance, operational performance and dispute resolution.
Middleton is a professor emeritus in the MU School of Law. He joined the faculty of the MU Law School in 1985 after an illustrious career with the federal government in Washington, D.C., where he was first a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. In 1977, he was appointed assistant deputy director of the Office for Civil Rights within the former U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
After serving as director of the Office of Systemic Programs for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and as principal deputy assistant secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education, Middleton was appointed associate general counsel of the EEOC’s trial division. He also served as director of the St. Louis district office of the EEOC. He helped to guide both agencies through major organizational transitions.
In addition to the public session, Middleton will lead a session with campus leaders and the leadership team in the Division of Student Services and Institutional Diversity.
