CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas’s Department of Music will host a band concert on Wednesday, April 24, in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.

The 7:30 p.m. concert, free and open to the public, should last approximately 90 minutes with a brief intermission.

The University Band will play first and the Symphonic Band will conclude the concert.

“The theme for the University Band portion is ‘A Day at the Circus’ and will feature music associated with the circus, including ‘Circus Days March’, ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and ‘Dream Circus,’” said Brantley Douglas, associate director of bands.

The Symphonic Band portion of the concert program will feature the music of George Gershwin. Music will include selections from his opera “Porgy and Bess”, highlights from “An American in Paris” and “The Second Rhapsody.” Terrie Shires will be a guest soloist on piano during “The Second Rhapsody.”

“Leslie Sellers is the graduate conducting student who will be directing the majority of the University Band portion of the concert,” Douglas said. “Senior music education student Barrett Parten will also guest-direct the University Band. I will be directing a concert suite from ‘Cirque Du Soleil’ in addition to conducting the Symphonic Band in the all-Gershwin program.”
