CONWAY — Dr. John Garst, visiting lecturer in voice at the University of Central Arkansas, will give a rare performance of “Die schöne Müllerin” by Franz Schubert at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, in Snow Fine Arts Recital Hall.
The concert is free and open to the public.
A tenor member of the voice faculty, Garst used the collection as the highlight of his doctoral studies at the University of North Texas.
“This collection of 20 songs employs the delightful poetry of Wilhelm Müller,” Garst said. “The emotional journey leads one through the young man’s infatuation, love, jealousy and finally, despair.”
Garst will be accompanied by Louis Menendez, collaborative pianist for the UCA Department of Music. Garst praised his “outstanding artistic abilities on the piano.”
Garst, who lived in Germany for eight years and has enjoyed several years of critical success, said he looked forward to the performance.
“This piece is very rarely performed all in one concert, as the stylistic variation and memorization required is quite extensive,” Garst said. “A live performance is very seldom to experience.”
