UCA TO WELCOME LOWENSTERN AS ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

Michael Lowenstern, considered among the world’s pre-eminent bass clarinetists, will visit the University of Central Arkansas on Thursday, Sept. 19, as an artist-in-residence.

As part of his residence, Lowenstern will perform a free public recital from 7:30–8:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in UCA’s Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. He will also conduct two lectures that day. From 1:40–2:30 p.m., he will give a lecture titled “Making a Career as a Musician in Today’s World.” From 5:20–6 p.m., he will discuss composing for clarinet and bass clarinet. Both sessions will take place in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

“The great thing about having him on campus is that he will share not only his musical knowledge, but he will also talk to students about how to make a career as a performing artist after graduation,” said Kelly Johnson, professor of clarinet and the faculty sponsor for the residency.

During his 25-year career, Lowenstern has toured as a soloist and with ensembles and has written music for concert, film, dance and other new media. He has recorded and toured in the U.S. and abroad with The Klezmatics, The Steve Reich Ensemble, The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New Jersey Symphony, Robin Cos Ensemble, John Zorn and Billband. As a composer, he has written internet “e-jingles” for clients such as Oracle, Warner Brothers, Chase Manhattan Bank and British Airways and has recorded more than 50 CDs. He has also served as a faculty member at New York University and the Julliard School and is now on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music, where he teaches bass clarinet in its contemporary performance program.
