A group of University of Central Arkansas students have set a new record for the world’s largest Christmas stocking.
The group, led by senior public relations major Brittany Jones, constructed a 53 foot tall and 26 foot wide red felt stocking that broke the previous world record set last September by more than 13 feet in length and 11 feet in width.
Jones, along with students Portia King, Bradley Klingsporn, Russell Carey, Justin Schulz and Jonathan Dalke, not only constructed the record-setting stocking, but also collected more than 10,000 toys that will be distributed to needy children throughout central Arkansas with the help of non-profits such as Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army Angel Tree.
The record was verified on Saturday, Dec. 3, by Guinness World Record Representative Stuart Claxton who presented a Guinness World Record certificate to the students of UCA led by Jones.
“There’s no way we could have done this alone,” Jones said. More than 20 student organizations and several local businesses donated to the effort.
Among the items collected were 423 Barbie dolls, 520 My Little Ponies, 200 board games, 163 sets of legos, 141 videos, 100 coats, 75 footballs and 11 bicycles.
