UCA PLANS EVENTS FOR ALCOHOL RESPONSIBILITY WEEK

The University of Central Arkansas joins colleges and universities across the nation during the month of October to educate and empower students to make responsible choices regarding alcohol. This year’s Alcohol Responsibility Week at UCA will consist of multiple outreach events that are part of a campaign designed to reduce underage drinking and impaired driving.

This campaign, based on the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, aims to bring attention to the serious public health issues posed by underage and excessive drinking among college students during a part of the academic calendar that is marked by football games, homecoming weekends and other large celebrations. Jenna Davidson, director of UCA Student Wellness, said collaborations between students and administrators are key to initiating dialogues that encourage safety and personal responsibility when alcohol is concerned.

UCA events scheduled for this week include:

  • Monday, Oct. 7, 9-10:30 a.m.: “Don’t Become a Statistic” – UCAPD will have a crashed car in front of the Student Center, allowing students to use markers to write their personal stories about how alcohol has negatively impacted their lives or the lives of people they know. An information table will also be set up.

  • Monday, Oct. 7, noon to 3 p.m.: The Office of Student Wellness and Development and UCAPD will have an informational table in the Student Center Lobby from noon to 3 p.m. with literature from the Gordie Campaign, which seeks to raise awareness of the signs of alcohol overdose.

  • Thursday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: “Pass the Keys” – UCAPD and the Office of Student Wellness and Development will have an informational table on designated driving in the Student Center Lobby.

  • Thursday, Oct. 10, 6-7 p.m.: “Pour Some Knowledge on Me” – The Office of Student Wellness and Development and UCAPD will host an interactive alcohol education class. This event will be held in the Student Center, room 213.
