CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Jazz Ensembles will perform Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The 7:30 p.m. concert is free and open to the public.

Two UCA student bands will perform: the Dixieland Band and Jazz Ensemble I. Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of saxophone in the UCA Music Department, said the show will present “a variety of styles of jazz music from different eras.”

The Dixieland Band will play “Milenburg Joys” by Jelly Roll Morton, “South” by Bennie Moten, “Baby Won’t You Please Come Home” by Charles Warfield and Clarence Williams, and “I’ve Found A New Baby” by Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams.

The program by Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Larry Jones, will include “Two Cultures” by Johnny Richards, “The Git” by Bill Holman, “Three and One” by Thad Jones, and “Willow Weep For Me” by Bob Brookmeyer.

UCA has had a big-band jazz ensemble since the 1940’s.  Originally named the “Top Hatters”, UCA has continued a long tradition of performing jazz concerts all over Arkansas and playing for dances and special events on campus and the surrounding community.

The UCA Dixieland Band was formed in the fall of 1975 by now retired UCA music professor Patrick Hasty.  The group performs concerts on campus as well as provides music for cultural and civic events in the surrounding area.  The ensemble blends all styles of Dixieland music, from Early New Orleans Style to Chicago Style and beyond.
