UCA hosts State GIS Board

CONWAY, Ark. (November 26, 2014) – The University of Central Arkansas will host the final meeting of the year of the Arkansas Geographic Information Systems Board on December 3 from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. The meeting will be in room 113 of the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Arkansas GIS Board was originally created in 1997 by Arkansas Code 15-21-501. The Board supports economic development and an improved quality of life for Arkansas citizens by providing basic spatial data infrastructure, coordinating geographic information activities, and creating short and long-term strategies that will result in improved decision making, effective asset management, and reduced costs. The State GIS Board works closely with the Arkansas Geographic Information Office.

Amy Whitehead, director of UCA’s Center for Community and Economic Development, worked to secure the December meeting in Conway. “This meeting will be a great opportunity for city planners, GIS technicians, students, and faculty in Conway and Central Arkansas to learn more about state-wide initiatives impacting spatial technology, and see the policy-making and governing process in action,” said Whitehead, who is also a board member.

The Center for Community and Economic Development (CCED) is a part of the University of Central Arkansas’ Outreach and Community Engagement Division. CCED helps to create stronger communities in Arkansas by training community and economic developers and assisting local leaders in their development efforts.
