UCA faculty earn grant funding 8/4

The following faculty and staff have recently received grant funding:Kathleen Atkins and Larry Robinson, College of Education, received a $55,859 grant for a non-traditional licensure program that will train ?change-of-career? individuals for a new career in teaching. The grant is funded by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Donna Fisher-Smiley, Department of Speech-Language Pathology, received an $8,100 grant to offer a speech-language pathology traineeship to a UCA graduate student. The grant is funded by Arkansas Children?s Hospital.

Ron Edwards and Reid Adams, Department of Cooperative Education, recently received a 15,200 grant to begin an internship program for four students. Students will have an opportunity to gain work experience in an area related to their major. The grant is funded by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Maurice Lee, College of Liberal Arts, recently received a $6,124 grant for the 9th International Conference on the Short Story in English. The conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal in June. Four UCA attendees read stories, served on panels and submitted to interviews at the conference. The grant is funded by Culture Ireland.

Ginny Adams, Department of Biology, recently received a $19,840 grant to determine the population size and movement of the Grotto Sculpin in Perry County, Mo. The study is expected to provide critical baseline data on an endangered species in Missouri. The grant is being funded by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Linda Griffith, Department of Mathematics, recently received a $146,880 grant for target testing and mathematics coaches training. A uniform testing system will be developed, reliability and validity studies conducted and six mathematics consortia will train teachers to serve as mathematics coaches. The goal is to contribute to improved student achievement on the state benchmark and end of course exams. The grant is funded by the Southeast Arkansas Education Service Cooperative.
