The Baum Gallery at the University of Central Arkansas will host two exhibitions from Sept.1 to Oct. 19, 2017. An opening and reception for both shows is 4–7 p.m Thursday, Aug. 31.
All events are free and open to the public.
The shows are Vertebrates: An Installation by Ben Butler and Equivocal Exposures: Alternative Photographic Processes.
Vertebrates is a large-scale, site-specific installation by one of Memphis’ best known contemporary sculptors.
As a complement to Vertebrates: An Installation by Ben Butler, UCA Downtown, located at 1105 West Oak Street, will feature Ben Butler: On Paper to showcase a selection of the artist’s works on paper. Butler will hold a public lecture on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 1:40 p.m. at the McCastlain Hall lecture hall, room 143.
Butler, a former instructor at Rhodes College and Memphis College of Art, is an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. His work draws inspiration from the evolution and order of the natural environment. As such, there are references to water, wood, grids, and the complexities of organic structures. Notably, Vertebrates was conceived specifically for the Baum Gallery.
Equivocal Exposures is a group exhibition of contemporary photography curated by Georgia Erger, a former intern at the Baum Gallery. This exhibition features the work of Kalee Appleton (Dallas, Texas), Jesseca Ferguson (Boston, Massachusetts), Clive Holden, (Toronto), Mo Munley (Dallas, Texas) and Juan Alberto Negroni (Dallas, Texas).
Erger will deliver an additional talk on Sept. 7 at 1:40 p.m. in the McCastlain Hall lecture hall, room 143.
“Equivocal Exposures presents a number of artists who use photographic processes in innovative and unconventional ways,” Erger said. “They expand the boundaries of what we consider to be photography by drawing upon the resources of traditional art forms such as drawing, painting and even sculpture and bookmaking.”
Baum Gallery Director Brian Young said, “While the two exhibitions are divergent, they both serve the same purpose: to inspire our students and other guests as they return to campus. Each of these artists is creating new and innovative work.”

The Baum Gallery is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entry to the exhibitions and the gallery is free and open to the public.
