UCA ANNOUNCES 2019 COHORT OF UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS

After 444 qualified students submitted applications to the program, 30 students were selected as the newest class of University Scholars at the University of Central Arkansas.

The entering cohort of 2019 has an average high school GPA above 4.0 and an average ACT score of 29. The class includes 26 students from 23 different Arkansas cities and four out-of-state students.

Operating alongside the Norbert O. Schedler Honors College, the University Scholars Program provides enhanced educational opportunities in a living/learning environment designed to develop students as socially responsible leaders within their chosen fields. This is the second cohort of University Scholars students.

The University Scholars program uses a holistic admission process that requires an application essay, an academic recommendation, and a review of the student’s high school transcript. Acceptance into the University Scholars Program comes with an academic stipend and access to a living-learning community in Jefferson W. Farris Honors Hall. Students in the University Scholars Program have opportunities to participate in service-learning projects, leadership training, and undergraduate research, which are all high-impact learning practices shown to increase the engagement, retention, and success of college students.

A team of faculty from across all academic colleges at UCA developed the curriculum for the University Scholars Program. The program was started in 2018 under the leadership of interim Honors College Dean Patricia Smith and UCA President Houston Davis.
