CONWAY — The Ying Quartet will be in residence at the University of Central Arkansas Oct. 3-4, conducting workshops and performing a public concert.

The 7:30 p.m. concert on Thursday, Oct. 4, is free and open to the public. UCA music faculty will join the quartet.

“I am especially looking forward to playing a movement of the Mendelssohn Octet with them on the concert,” said Dr. Linda Hsu, professor of violin, said. “They have made it to the top of this very competitive field and we want them to share their success story and experience with us.”

Also joining the Ying Quartet on the Mendelssohn Octet will be UCA faculty members Israel Getzov on violin, Dr. Stephen Feldman on cello and William Shipley, a recent UCA graduate, on viola.

The Ying Quartet includes Ayano Ninomiya and Janet Ying on violin, Phillip Ying on viola and David Ying on cello. Hsu and Feldman, UCA cello professor, attended the Eastman School of Music at the same time members of the Ying Quartet were students there. Since then, the Ying Quartet has become world-renowned, having graced concert venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall.

The program also includes Quartet in C Major, Op. 20, No. 2 by Franz Joseph Haydn; A Musical Dim Sum: A selection of Chinese-American works; and Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 by Claude Debussy.

During the residency, the Ying Quartet present outreach activities on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m at the Gussie Scales Auditorium at Conway High-East Campus and at 2 p.m. at the Southwestern Energy Building in Hendrix Village.

The Artist in Residence program is funded by UCA’s arts fee and is administered by the College of Fine Arts and Communication. For more information, call the Office of the Dean, College of Fine Arts and Communication, at (501) 450-3293 or e-mail jdmiller@uca.edu.
