CONWAY — Both the University of Central Arkansas Symphonic Band and University Band will give their final performances of spring 2016 on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The University Band will open the night’s lineup, performing six concert band pieces composed from the likes of UCA alumni to giants such as Frank Ticheli. Beginning with “Accolade”, composed by UCA alum Brady Massey, the band will continue with “Third Suite” by Robert Jager, “Loch Lomond” by Ticheli, “They Hung Their Harps in the Willows” by Arkansas composer W. Francis McBeth, “Brighton Beach” by William Latham, and finally “The Five’s Prevail” by Richard Saucedo.

The University Band features both undergraduate and graduate students in the role of conductor for the first half of the concert. Undergraduates Daniel Severs, Mallory Brooks and Hunter Roberts will lead, as they are enrolled in an advanced conducting course and have worked with the band throughout the semester. Graduate music education student Rebecca Kimmons and Nathan Rakow, a graduate wind-conducting student — both of whom are on the UCA band staff — will also conduct.

For the second half of the night’s event, the Symphonic Band — under the direction of Brantley Douglas, the associate director of bands at UCA, will perform “Barn Dance and Cowboy Hymn” by Philip Sparke, “Divertimento for Band” by Vincent Persichetti and “Cartoon” by Paul Hart. Sparke’s piece will be conducted by Rakow.
