CONWAY — Graduating art students at the University of Central Arkansas will display their work at the annual Fall Senior Exhibit in the Baum Gallery of Fine Art from Nov. 5-Dec. 3.
Opening receptions will be held on Nov. 5 from 4-6 p.m. and Nov. 22 from 2-4 p.m. The receptions and exhibition are free and open to the public.
The 14 art students participating in the senior exhibition will present their strongest works made during their junior and senior years. The students’ art is represented in a variety of media, including graphic design, photography, sculpture, fibers, drawing, painting and printmaking.
Dr. Jeff Young, professor and chair of the UCA Department of Art, said that every senior exhibition was different each year because students bring their own unique styles and experiences to the show.
“The students are making artwork about what is important to them, what they think is important for society,” he said. “But it is also an exploration of the medium that they work in and the subject matter that they work with.”
BA students presenting works at the exhibition this year are John Camp of Little Rock, Fine Art Emphasis; Chelsea Collins of Flower Mound, Texas, Fine Art Emphasis; Tim Ellen of Norphlet, Fine Art Emphasis; Courtney Faddis of Clinton, Fine Art Emphasis; Jessika Hammons of Arkadelphia, Art Education Emphasis; Clint Hargis of Conway, Fine Art Emphasis; Shelby Horner of Bentonville, Art Education Emphasis; Cherie Hughes of Heber Springs, Art Education Emphasis; Candace Kelly of Quitman, Fine Art Emphasis; Mark Kiefer of Paris, Fine Art Emphasis; Kerrie Mahoney of Conway, Fine Art Emphasis; Sara Perlman of Longmont, Colo., Fine Art Emphasis; Heather Reinold of Greenbrier, Fine Art Emphasis and James Spickard of Little Rock, Fine Art Emphasis.
“I expect there will be artwork that is delightful and pleasing to look at,” Dr. Young said. “I think there will be artwork that is meant to make the viewer stop and think about something in more depth. And I expect it to be an example of the best work that these students have made as they have progressed through the art department.”
Barclay McConnell, director of the Baum Gallery, said she thought this year’s exhibition would still maintain some similarities to previous exhibitions.
“Because the Department of Art here at UCA has such a talented studio faculty, we consistently see excellent student work submitted to the senior exhibition,” she said. “Due to the focus of study of many of these exhibiting artists, this exhibition will be particularly strong in graphic work. “
