Maynard Ferguson’s amazing high-register trumpet work made him a star with the Stan Kenton Orchestra at the dawn of the 1950s, and his elastic range and boundless energy have kept him up there for almost fifty years. His recording of ?Gonna Fly Now,? the theme from the Rocky movies, won him not only three Grammy nominations in 1978, but also a Gold Album and a No. 1 record. This was the first time in history that a jazz recording topped the popular music charts.

While on campus February 27, Ferguson and his band members will be holding a Brass Clinic for UCA and other interested music students, at 4 p.m. in Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The Maynard Ferguson appearance is part of UCA’s Artist in Residence series, a program of the College of Fine Arts & Communication.

The UCA Jazz Ensemble?s concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24 at Reynolds Performance Hall is free and open to the public.
