Dr. Chenyi Hu, Department of Computer Science, and student Justin Michaels recently received a $2,650 State Undergraduate Research Fellowship for a computational study of nervous systems.
Dr. James Murray, Department of Biology, also will be involved with the research, which will study the representation of biological neural networks as artificial neural network on a computer.
By stimulating biological activities, the team hopes to learn more about how neural networks work and what kinds of patters connect them.
This interdisciplinary research project will enhance collaborations of different departments. Computational study on biological systems has become a very active research area called bioinformatics. The research team expect research results in this area to have broad impacts.
