Conway—The University of Central Arkansas’s literary journal, the Toad Suck Review, will host Profilla, a Halloween bandfest fundraiser, at Bear’s Den Pizza on Friday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. to raise money for printing the highly anticipated second issue, due out in January 2012.
A cover charge of $5 will be collected at the door, and historic Issue #1 will be available for purchase alongside discounted back issues of Exquisite Corpse Annual, the journal’s former incarnation. Toad Suck Review T-shirts will also be on sale.
The event will feature four bands: ambient nu-jazz duo Vibrant 6th, starring Professors Jesse Butler and Michael Yoder; a stripped-down version of Slings and Arrows, original blues/jazz music by Professors Garry Craig Powell and Chris Craun; Luke and Alan Pittman, Craig Seager, and Professor Marck Beggs starring in the Americana/folk rock band dog gods; and progressive metal band Still Reign, made up of Jake Brown, Matt Paul, Adam Crain, Andy Honer, Josh Ingram and Tyler Scalise.
“This bizarro bandfest is going to be big,” said Editor-in-Chief Mark Spitzer. “There will be a costume contest; hazardous dancing may occur, and since the theme is professor bands, the Toad Suck Review will be awarding an honorary doctorate in Heavy Metallurgy to the members of Still Reign. In short, history shall be made.”
Added Profzilla rocker Powell: “Chris Craun and I are looking forward to serving up our steaming stew of sensual, spicy and plain ornery originals and standards, a whole mess of blues, boogie, jazz and even funk. And we’re eager to share the stage with other aliens, extraterrestrials and vagabonds who make music, especially my good friends from Still Reign, who will kick your posteriors so hard you’ll have bruises.”
The Toad Suck Review is published annually by the Department of Writing in the College of Fine Arts and Communication and has become a literary force in Central Arkansas, receiving hundreds of submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, eco-writing and translations from all over the world.
Bear’s Den Pizza is located at 235 Farris Road in Conway. For more information, visit toadsuckreview.org or contact Spitzer at (501) 450-3339 or toadsuckreview@gmail.com.
