Dr. Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine, the director of the ?Skeptics Society? and the host of the Skeptics Lecture Series at Caltech, will give a guest lecture titled ?The Value of Skepticism? at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 4 at Reynolds Performance Hall.
His appearance is sponsored by the Psi Chi Honors Society and Psychology Club. The lecture is free and open to the public.Shermer is the author of ?Why People Believe Such Weird Things? and ?How we Believe: The Search for God in an Age of Science? that were on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list as well as the New Sciences science books bestseller list in England.
Shermer?s analysis and debunking of Holocaust denial can be found in his book ?Denying History,? co-authored with Alex Grobman. Also, he has his own radio show, ?Science talk with Michael Shermer,? with an NPR affiliate in Southern California. His broadcast reaches over a quarter million listeners each week.
Shermer received his bachelor?s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University, a master?s degree in experimental psychology from California State University at Fullerton and a doctorate in the history of science from Claremont Graduate School.
Shermer has appeared on such shows as ?Donahue,? ?Oprah? and ?Unsolved Mysteries,? as a skeptic of weird and extraordinary claims. He has also appeared in documentaries aired on A&E, Discovery, and The Learning Channel.
