College of Fine Arts and Communication Media Office
CONWAY — Hornaments, the annual celebration of the holiday season by (French) horn players of all ages from around Arkansas and the Mid-South, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Little Rock.
There is no cost to participate, and all ages and abilities are welcome, said Dr. Brent Shires, assistant professor of horn at the University of Central Arkansas.
“We will be learning and performing Christmas carols and holiday songs for the public to enjoy before the dinner hour,” Shires said. “There is also no cost to be an audience member, so invite all your friends to turn out for the performance at the Little Rock Marriott.”
The Hornaments schedule will include:
1-1:30 p.m. — Registration and Warmup (UALR Fine Arts Choir Room)
1:30-4 — Rehearsal (UALR Fine Arts Choir Room)
4-4:30 — Travel time
4:30-5 — Setup for Performance (Marriott Hotel Lobby)
5-6 — Performance (Marriott Hotel Lobby)
“All participants should bring a music stand,” Shires said. “Holiday clothing is encouraged, the crazier, the better. You might even consider dressing up your horn.”
Participants needing transportation between UALR and the Marriott Hotel should contact Shires in advance.
The UALR Fine Arts Building is found by locating University Avenue (from I-630 travel south, from I-30 travel north). A traffic light at the top of a hill will bring you to 28th Street. Turn east on 28th, then right onto the one-way Campus Drive. The Fine Arts Building is the first entrance to the right off Campus Drive. (See http://ualr.edu/www/features/map/)
The Marriott Little Rock (formerly the Peabody) is located downtown at 3 Statehouse Plaza, better thought of as West Markham Street across from the Capital Hotel. Street parking is plentiful, and valet parking is available.
Hornaments was founded in the 1990s by Caroline Kinsey and continues today under the direction of Shires and the Arkansas Horn Club and as an outreach event of the University of Central Arkansas Horn Studio. Participants include band directors, school and university students, professional hornists and community players and amateurs.
