CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas will host its annual Graduate Film Screening on Monday, April 7 at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.
The screening, free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. and last for about an hour. Three films will be screened.
The films are graduate thesis projects by candidates for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Digital Filmmaking. Students in this program complete 42 hours of coursework in their first two years and then do 18 hours of thesis work in their third year. Part of the 18 hours of thesis work is for the students to complete a 20-minute thesis film, which will be then screened publicly.
“After the screening the students must perform a oral defense of their film at a meeting conducted by faculty members of the thesis committee the following week,” said Dr. Bruce Hutchinson, associate professor of digital filmmaking and director of graduate studies in the program. “In the meeting the student justifies creative choices, etc., for the film, and if the student passes, they can graduate in May.”
The three films this year are of the science fiction/horror genre: Collection Day, directed by Scott Eggleston of Salt Lake City, Utah; In Borrowed Time, directed by Dustin Barnes of Morrilton; and Spectre-o-Scope, directed by Mark Clifford of Little Rock.
The films were all filmed in the Central Arkansas area.
