CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Jazz Ensembles will perform at 5:45 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.
Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of saxophone and director of the UCA Dixieland Band, said that ensemble’s program would include “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder” by James M. Black; “La Vie En Rose” by Edith Piaf, Louiguy and Marguerite Monnot; and the traditional spiritual “Down by the Riverside.”

“La Vie En Rose” will feature graduate student Liz Taylor-McMullen on the vocal and accordion.

Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Dr. Gail Robertson, assistant professor of tuba and euphonium, will perform “Dawg House” by Steve Briody, “Work Song” by Nat Adderley, “Stompin’ at the Savoy” by Benny Goodman and “Funk Tank” by Lars Halle.

“The Jazz II has gone funk,” Robertson said, adding that she had decided to add more solos to “Funk Tank” and feature the rhythm section with undergraduate students Noah Mellick on drums, Ben Scaccia on bass and Hunter Betts on guitar.

Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Larry Jones, assistant professor of trumpet and jazz, will perform “Mira Mira” by Matt Harris,“Begin the Beguine” by Cole Porter and “Groove Blues” by Don Menza and “Moten Swing.”

“’Moten Swing’ is important historically because Count Basie was the pianist in the Benny Moten Band, and he took over the band as leader after Moten’s death, signifying the birth of Kansas City Swing style,” Jones said.
