JAZZ ENSEMBLES SET FEB. 16 CONCERT

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Department of Music will host its first jazz ensemble concert of the spring semester on Monday, Feb. 16, at the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.
The 7:30 p.m. performance, free and open to the public, will feature Jazz Ensemble I and II and the UCA Dixieland Band.
Larry Jones directs Jazz Ensemble I. Dr. Gail Robertson directs Jazz Ensemble II; Dr. Jackie Lamar directs the UCA Dixieland Band.
“The Dixieland program will feature traditional New Orleans music for Mardi Gras since Fat Tuesday falls on Feb. 17,” Lamar said.
The Dixieland Band will perform “New Orleans Masquerade” by Irving Mills, “Beale Street Blues” by W.C. Handy and “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” by Henry Roeland Byrd.
The Jazz Ensemble I program will feature jazz trombonist Sean Nelson. Nelson will perform two of his compositions, including “Just Friends” and “Freaks in Mayberry.” Jazz Ensemble I will also play selections from the Count Basie and Buddy Rich libraries.
The program for Jazz Ensemble II includes “Such Sweet Thunder” by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” by Josef Zawinul, “A Child Is Born” by Thad Jones, and “Gorilla Man Blues” by Mark Taylor.
