CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas will host internationally renowned sculptor Patrick Dougherty for a lecture Thursday, Sept. 18at 1:40 p.m. in McCastlain Hall 143.

Dougherty, who is in the process of installing one of his large-scale architectural sculptures formed from natural materials on UCA’s campus, is appearing as an Artist in Residence.

Dougherty designs his sculptures by weaving natural materials such as twigs, sticks and saplings. He relies on the help of community volunteers to assist him with the gathering of these natural materials found among the environment as well as with the construction of the sculpture.

Volunteers can sign up at https://uca.edu/art/baum/; no sculpture experience is required.

Dougherty has constructed more then 230 sculptures in public spaces worldwide over a 30-year span.

“We are very lucky to have Patrick Dougherty in Conway and at UCA to create a unique sculpture for our community,” said Barclay McConnell, director of UCA’s Baum Gallery of Fine Art. “He is a delight to work with, and I know the public will enjoy the opportunity to get to meet him at the lecture and hear about his work.”

Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet Dougherty at the public unveiling of the finished sculpture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The lecture and Q&A are free and open to the public. No tickets are required. For more information, contact McConnell at barclaym@uca.edu or (501) 450-5793.
