INAUGURATION DAY WORKSHOP AT UCA

The University of Central Arkansas will host an inauguration day workshop on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center on the campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and participants are welcomed to bring their lunch.

The workshop is part of the CitiZINE Project, which explores what it means to be a citizen and how to actively participate in moving society toward a common good. For this season, participants will use zines, which are small, self-published booklets.

“Zines have a rich history as a form of independent publishing that dates back to the 1930’s. They are a way to get ideas out into the world cheaply and easily and without having to ask for permission,” said Kristen Spickard, marketing coordinator in the Division of Outreach and Community Engagement. “With the internet now allowing these same possibilities, you would think that zines would be dying out, but actually there is a strong interest in zines today and a network of people across the world are making them all kinds of topics that interest them.”

Dr. Heather Yates, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science; Dr. Candice Barnes, interim chair and associate professor in the Department of Elementary, Literacy, and Special Education; and Dr. John Saunders, visiting professor in the School of Communication, will lead the discussion.

The vice presidential and presidential inaugurations will be televised at the conference center from 10 a.m. to noon. At noon, Yates will lead a panel discussion on the history of inaugurations, the peaceful transition of power and the historical elections where the winner of the popular vote did not win the election followed by the zine-making workshop.

This workshop is just one of several scheduled for this year that focuses on zines and civic engagement. For more information, visit: uca.edu/outreach/citizine.
