HILLIARD SPEECH SHOWCASE SET FOR FEB. 22

Olive Hilliard

The annual Hilliard Speech Showcase is set for the University of Central Arkansas College of Business room 100 Thursday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.

The event, free and open to the public, was created to honor the memory of Olive Hilliard, who served as an instructor of Writing and Communication at UCA from 2003 until her death in 2010.

The Hilliard Showcase is sponsored by the UCA School of Communication. It features outstanding students from Principles of Communication classes. Professors nominate students from their classes for the showcase. All finalists will be recognized, and the top winner will receive a gift card.

Teri Colaianni, lecturer in the School of the Communication and Hilliard Speech Showcase committee chair, said the nominated students were selected because they exemplified Hilliard’s spirit and character, including compassion, friendliness and a great sense of humor.

“Olive Hilliard was respected by her colleagues and admired by her students,” Colaianni said.

As a community leader, Hilliard served as a board member for Habitat for Humanity of Faulkner County and was a former member of the Arkansas Realtors Association, Faulkner County Board of Realtors; National Board of Realtors; and Coldwell Banker Advantage Realtors. She was also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The Olive M. Hilliard Fund was established to support the winners of this showcase. To contribute to this fund, contact the UCA Foundation or the School of Communication office at 501-450-3344.
