Carolyn Kelley, Department of Middle/Secondary Education & Instructional Technologies, received a grant of $12,007 from the Pulaski County Special School District to support Junior University.
Junior University is a collaborative effort between the Pulaski County Special School District and UCA to provide an early college campus experience for fifth-graders identified as potential first generation college bound students. The students visited UCA from June 13 to June 17 for a four-night five-day period. They had the opportunity to attend college classes, eat in the Christian Cafeteria, live in a UCA dorm, tour campus buildings and grounds and participate in a variety of activities.
The Junior University program has been implemented for 13 years and data reflects that 87.8 percent of the students attending classes of 1991, 1992 and 1993 entered colleges and universities. Close to 50 percent of these student were enrolled on scholarships. The program has affected not only these students, but their families as well with 170 parents and relatives attending a recent graduation ceremony for the Junior University scholars.
