The University of Central Arkansas Gender Studies Program will host a public lecture titled, ?Images of African-American Women,? by Dr. Sharon Jones at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7. Due to a large response, the location of the lecture has changed to BBA Room 205.
Dr. Jones? lecture examines the eroticization of the black female body in contemporary film and television. For instance, does Hally Berry?s performance in Monster?s Ball represent the African-American female body in oppressive ways? Does Janet Jackson?s performance at the Super Bowl represent a form of sexual liberation? Please join Jones in an exploration of the complex nature of the discourse surrounding the eroticization of the African American female body.
Jones is assistant professor of English at Wright State University. Her recent book publications include: Rereading the Harlem Renaissance: Race, Class, and Gender in the Fiction of Jessie Fauset, Zora Neale Hurston, and Dorothy West and The Prentice Hall Anthology of African American Literature.
