CONWAY — Filmmaker Elizabeth Wood will visit the University of Central Arkansas as artist in residence March 16.

Wood wrote and directed White Girl, her debut feature film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Netflix will distribute it.

Jennifer Gerber, assistant professor of digital filmmaking, is the faculty sponsor for the residency.

“Rarely does a film impact me in the way this one did,” said Gerber, who saw White Girl at Sundance. “As the lights came up in the theater, I was crying and out of breath from the punch delivered with the last shot of the film. I can say honestly that I have thought about this film every day since I saw it.

White Girl is unflinchingly daring and will serve as an inspiration for emerging filmmakers. Elizabeth is on the cusp of a major breakout in her career, and we are catching her in a moment between her premiere at Sundance and her next big move.”

Residency activities, all in Stanley Russ Hall 103, include a directing master class for students from 4-5:30 p.m. and a 7 p.m. screening of White Girl, to be followed by a Q&A with Wood.

All activities are free and open to the public.

“Elizabeth has a very unusual ‘Cinderella Story’ of how her first feature was made,” Gerber said. “She was able to partner with producing legend Christine Vachon at Killer films and the movie stars Morgan Saylor, Brian “Sene” MarcJustin BarthaChris NothIndia Menuez and Adrian Martinez. I believe students will benefit from getting to pick her brain and learn from her process.”
