The University of Central Arkansas Faculty Senate voted in a special meeting Tuesday to support a new administrative policy that seeks to improve diversity throughout the campus.
Last week senators expressed concern over a proposed resolution to create an Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action, which was scheduled for vote at the next board of trustees meeting in October.
After the faculty senate meeting last week, Provost Gabriel Esteban and other administrators rescinded the proposed resolution and this week presented senators with a proposed policy change rather than a new office.
The new policy provides for the maintenance of the existing Office of Affirmative Action, staffed by Vice President Jack Gillean, which will continue to participate in the investigation of incidences of alleged discrimination; the implementation of educational workshops and programs that proactively address intolerance and harassment and promote diversity; and the part-time assignment of duties for Dr. Willie Hardin who will be responsible for helping to recruit a diverse workforce at UCA.
After discussion, senators voted to support the policy change which will be announced as part of the president?s report at the next board of trustees meeting on Friday, Oct. 8.
