The following grants have been received by UCA faculty and staff: Reid Adams, Department of Biology, recently received a $52,000 grant to study the abundance and distribution of fish in the floodplain wetlands of the Arkansas River.
The grant is being funded by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
The study will provide a better understanding of how river fish are distributed in the Arkansas River floodplain. Knowledge of fish-habitat linkages will aid in the implementation of construction/restoration measures.
Reid Adams and Ginny Adams, Department of Biology, also received a $2,916 grant for a survey of fish in the Lower Cape LaCroix Creek and associated wetlands at Benton Hills, Scott County, Missouri.
This grant is being funded by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
According to the authors, this grant will help elucidate the value of diminishing floodplain habitat to Missour River fishes. It will provide valuable information on the abundance and distribution of threatened and endangered wetland fish in Missouri.
Debra Burris, Department of Physics and Astronomy, recently received two grants for $4,500 and $6,491 for an archival search for lighter neutron-capture elements.
The first grant is being funded by the American Astronomical Society and the second is being funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Agency through the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium.
The grants will be used to determine the origins of rare elements such as gold, platinum and silver by examining some of the oldest stars in our Galaxy.
