Faculty Grants 4/28

The following faculty recently received grant funding for various programs and projects: Don Perry, Department of Chemistry, received a $4,000 grant to study surface-enhanced infrared absorption of various halogenated classes of pesticides/herbicides and lubricants.

This grant is being funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Agency through the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium.

Patrick Desrochers, Department of Chemistry, received a $4,100 grant to study bonding and reactivity of Borohydride and sulfur acids on Nickel.

The grant is being funded by the American Chemical Society through the Petroleum Research Fund.

A long-term goal of this research is to prepare a nickel-based material that could be used as a catalyst to generate hydrogen gas, a renewable alternative fuel. More immediate goals this summer involve the preparation of the nickel catalyst, controlling the delivery of hydrogen-rich material to the catalyst, and initial attempts to generate hydrogen using electrochemical methods.

Shoudong Feng and Marry H. Mosley, Department of Early Childhood and Special Education, received a grant for $750 to determine if achievement obtained in the reading clinic is retained in the classroom and to find ways to help student retain their achievements.

The grant is being funded through the Arkansas Reading Association.

Lisa Ray, Department of Health Sciences, received a $59,500 grant to implement a pilot program called Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) that has a goal of reducing the risk factors associated with college student drinking.

The program is being funded by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

Jeff Whittingham, Department of Middle/Secondary Education and Instructional Technologies, received a $19,500 grant for a summer institute to train teachers in civic education called ?We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution.?

The grant is being funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Center for Civic Education.

Carolyn Williams, College of Education, received a $107,248 grant for a UCA/public school partnership based on No Child Left Behind.

The grant is being funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

John Bratton, Kim Bradford, Victor Puleo and Sherry Roberts received a $52,700 grant to produce the 2006 Insurance Education Institute, which will help high school teachers learn about the importance of insurance and its role in society.

The grant is being funded by the Insurance Education Foundation.

Debbie Barnes, Mary Mosley and Linda Arnold, College of Education, received a $20,000 grant to train UCA faculty and public school teachers to use the Pathwise Observation System.

The grant is being funded by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Don Perry, Department of Chemistry, received a $2,500 grant to investigate better methods of detecting dangerous organic molecules, such as pesticides, in the environment.

The grant is being funded by the National Aeronautics & Space Agency through the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium.

Brooks Pearson, Jerry Mimms, Brooks Green and Jeff Allender, Department of Geography, received a $70,191 grant to train public school teachers to use geographic information systems, remote sensing and scanning electron microscope technologies to teach core concepts in math and science.

The grant is being funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

Kevin Browne, Department of Mass Communication and Theatre, received a $2,500 grant to assist in the production of ?The Threepenny Opera? at UCA.

The grant is being funded by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc.
