UCA Community Development Institute
The Community Development Institute (CDI) established in 1987 at the University of Central Arkansas trains community and economic development professionals from Arkansas and surrounding states. The complete CDI experience is a three-year training program, with one week of training per year. Participants move through the program curriculum in cohorts and are exposed to a comprehensive, applied approach to the field of community and economic development. For more information about CDI, visit uca.edu/cdi, or contact Shelby Fiegel at 501-450-5269 or sfiegel@uca.edu.
Strong Towns
Charles Marohn is the president and founder of Strong Towns, a media organization leading a national movement for changing how communities fundamentally grow and prosper. The mission of Strong Towns is to support a model of development that allows America’s cities, towns and neighborhoods to become financially strong and resilient.
Marohn is a professional engineer and member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He is the lead author of “Thoughts on Building Strong Towns” (Volumes 1, 2 and 3), as well as the author of “A World Class Transportation System.”
Marohn hosts the Strong Towns podcast and is a primary writer for Strong Towns’ web content. Charles “Chuck” Marohn has presented Strong Towns’ concepts in hundreds of cities and towns across North America. In 2017, Planetizen named Marohn one of the 10 Most Influential Urbanists of all time. He is also a longtime commentator on KAXE Northern Community Radio. He currently co-hosts KAXE’s Dig Deep program, a monthly examination of public policy issues affecting Minnesotans. Learn more at strongtowns.org.
Living on the Edge: A Poverty Simulation
Living on the Edge: A Poverty Simulation is an experiential exercise that allows participants to view poverty from different perspectives. The simulation is intended to move community leaders to think about the harsh realities of poverty and to talk about how communities can address the problem. The simulation is a unique, interactive experience that helps people begin to understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress.
Bill Miller and Friend of CDI Awards
The five-day training session concludes with a special graduation and awards ceremony. A progressive leader from the institute’s Advisory Board will receive the Bill Miller Award in recognition for longstanding leadership and support of CDI, and one organization will be honored with the Friend of the Community Development Institute Award, for demonstrating strong support for community development in Arkansas.
