In observance of National Campus Safety Awareness Month, UCA student volunteers promoted crosswalk safety during Brake For Bears on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Every fall and spring, Brake For Bears asks for student volunteers to work this campaign, and this year the UCA Police Department received a record-breaking amount of responses within the first day with over 150 students, faculty, and staff signing up to volunteer.
“We created an online method for choosing a volunteer shift, which simplified the volunteer process. By simplifying the process, we had several more students volunteer than ever before,” UCA Director of Community Services Arch Jones Jr. said. “That contributed to an increase in volunteers, but we’ve also got an incredible base of repeat volunteers consisting of students, faculty, and staff. They continue to come back year after year to give their time to help our campus.”
This campaign is to promote pedestrian awareness and urges Conway drivers to keep an eye out for UCA students who are crossing the street. Brake For Bears is also a learning tool for students to teach them about crossing streets safely. Student volunteers passed out shirts and safety information to help drivers and pedestrians remember to be aware, be considerate, and be safe.
