CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Bear Marching Band will hold its eighth Band Extravaganza at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall on Thursday, Nov. 29.
The two-hour performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the UCA Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and the Bear Marching Band. Although the event is free, it is also the biggest fundraiser for the entire band program. A $10 donation for adults and $5 for students at the door is appreciated.
The UCA Wind Ensemble, conducted by Director of Bands Dr. Ricky Brooks, will start the concert One of the highlights of the performance will be with Dr. Kelly Johnson, associate professor of music, who will play Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” on clarinet. UCA’s top Jazz Band, under the direction of Larry Jones, assistant professor of music, will also play a few songs to give the audience a chance to hear music they wouldn’t typically hear at the football games. The Bear Marching Band and color guard, under the direction of Associate Director of Bands Brantley Douglas, will round out the Extravaganza with music from the football season, including selections from the Super Hero show and traditional UCA favorites.
“You’ve seen the Bear Marching Band on the field,” Brooks said. “Now you get to see them up close and personal.”
Brooks said the Extravaganza is performed for the UCA High School Honor Band members and their families to show them what UCA band program is like. The UCA High School Honors Band, made up of 56 students from 22 high schools from around the state who have advanced from All-State Band last year, will be on campus for a clinic Nov. 29-30.
